Description
Abbey Dairy is a retail shop built in the early 20th century by J Foster & Sons. It features limestone ashlar and glass as its main materials. The shop has a small trapezoidal plan with a frontage to Lower Borough Walls, backing onto No. 46 St James's Parade. The flat roof is not visible.
The exterior showcases a full-width shop front that includes one wide and one narrow plate glass panel above a low stall-board, with smaller square transom lights above. To the right, there is a glazed door and transom light set back, and further to the right, a panelled and glazed door with a transom light. These elements are all situated beneath a fascia with a moulded cornice and are framed by very narrow panelled pilasters with modelled consoles. Above the cornice, there is a three-part lofty parapet, with the centre section raised and featuring a segmental head, while the sides have swept moulded copings that stop at the outer ends, which are adorned with small fluted finials topped with ball cappings. The centre and end sections of the parapet are faced with painted and gilt glass display panels. The centre panel reads ‘W.D.LANE/ABBEY DAIRY’ in decorative capitals, enclosing a painted figure of a cow within a cartouche. To the left, the lettering ‘BEST DAIRY PRODUCE’ appears, and to the right, ‘OUR CREAM A SPECIALITY’, both also presented in cartouche-like embellishments.
The interior was not inspected.
