Description

22 Westgate Buildings is a house and shop dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, painted on the ground floor, and features a double Roman tile roof. The building has a wide single depth plan and is positioned at the end of another terrace.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with three windows facing the street. There is a single blind window on the canted corner and one window on the return to Hot Bath Street. All windows are plain sashes, with the ones on the canted corner being blind. The ground floor has a panelled door with a small transom light in the centre bay. The shop entrance is located at the canted corner, flanked by shop windows on both sides. The shopfront is from the mid-19th century and remains largely unaltered. A platband is present at the first floor sill level, and there is a lintel, cornice, and parapet above the second floor windows. The mansard roof, which faces the street, has two dormers with plain sashes and another dormer on the return to Hot Bath Street. There is an ashlar stack with some pots on both ridges.

The end of the facade is toothed for the continuation of the terrace, but this would have required the demolition of Abbey Church House, which did not occur. As a result, the side wall, originally intended to be an internal party wall, was built of rubble and left unfinished. The interior has not been inspected. This building shares characteristics with other end-of-terrace improvements made by the City Architect, John Palmer.
