Description
46 St James's Parade is a house in a terrace, built around 1785 with 19th and 20th-century alterations, designed by John Palmer. The building features rendered and painted ashlar with a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and has a single window on each floor, all of which are plain sashes. Above the first and second floors, there are paired dormers with a tripartite window framed by a moulded architrave, and a cornice drip is raised over the Palladian window on the first floor. The ground floor has a full-width shopfront from the late 19th or early 20th century, complete with pilasters, a fascia, cornice, and a recessed central door. The building is topped with a modillion cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet, and features a deep stack on the right side of the mansard roof. The rear of the house has some plain sash windows. Although the interior was not inspected, the street itself was laid out in 1768 as part of a development initiated in 1765 by Richard Jones, Thomas Jelly, and Henry Fisher, who were granted permission to demolish the old borough walls to build new houses. The street was designed with bollards at each end and featured houses that faced a broad paved walk instead of a road. The architectural style shows influences from John Wood the Younger, particularly in the work attributed to Thomas Jelly and John Palmer. Most houses were constructed around 1768, but this house is a later addition to the street, which underwent extensive redevelopment following bomb damage in the area.
