Description

The Old Hetling Court Pump Room, originally known as No.5 Hot Bath Street and Hetling Court, is a former pump room now used as offices. It was built in 1804, possibly in 1792, by John Palmer. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and has a slate roof. It has a compact square shape and backs onto Abbey Church House, projecting forward with a former entrance from Hetling Court that is now blocked.

The exterior features three floors, with the main elevation facing Old Hot Bath. This elevation has three bays, with twelve-pane sash windows set in plain reveals on the upper two floors. The second floor has a blind centre light, while the ground floor showcases three large arched openings with twelve-pane sash windows and radial bars, all in sunk surrounds and with a moulded impost band. A rusticated plinth rises to the sills of the ground floor windows, and a moulded string course runs above the ground and first floors, the latter framed by narrow full-height quoin pilasters that culminate in a simple capital beneath the main cornice, which features a blocking course and parapet. A painted band above the ground floor still shows the words "HETLING PUMP ROOM."

To the left, there is an entrance in the adjoining property. The return elevation facing Hetling Court has four bays, with the first bay being blind, and features sash windows in architraves, with twelve-pane windows on the first and second floors and a fifteen-pane window on the ground floor. A deep portico on four unfluted Doric columns with two responds supports a flat entablature above a doorway that has a bolection mould surround and sidelights, which are all blocked. A steel external fire stair rises above the portico. The bands and cornice continue from the main front, and to the right, there is a large ashlar chimney stack. The interior has not been inspected.
