Description
The Refuge is an inn, later converted into a house, with a core dating back to the 16th century. It was significantly altered and extended in the late 18th century and the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with brick additions, stone dressings, and has double Roman tile roofs. It is in a composite Gothic style. The main structure is two storeys with seven windows, and features a square tower projecting from the fifth bay, rising to three storeys above the parapet. Ground floor windows are 19th-century casements with marginal glazing; upper floor windows are plate glass sashes, all with segmental heads. A three-light Gothic window is located on the right-hand ground floor. The tower has two Gothick windows facing the road, featuring Y tracery: the upper window retains its original leaded panes. The top storey features a roundel and plain oblong openings. The doorway within the tower has flush beaded panels formed by Y tracery and a moulded architrave. Rendered stacks are present at the ends of the building. The rear elevation includes a four-light chamfered mullion window and a two-light edge-moulded mullion window. Inside, a ground floor room on the left contains an inglenook fireplace with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and retains fragments of 16th-century painted decoration, including crude Vitruvian scrolls in black on grey plaster. A staircase light contains late 18th-century painted glass depicting Picturesque scenes. The building was formerly known as the Bell Inn.
