Description

Nos. 3, 4 and 5 Pierrepont Place are a group of houses dating from approximately 1740 to 1750. They may have been designed by John Wood the Elder or Thomas Jelly, reflecting characteristics of both Wood’s work and Jelly’s designs for North Parade Buildings. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar, with the ground floor painted. They are built on an L-shaped plan, presenting three bays to Pierrepont Place and six bays to Old Orchard Street. The houses feature a platband at first floor level, a cornice, and a parapet which extends around the whole group. There is a basement to No. 5 and cellars beneath the others.

No. 3 has two windows to the front, while Nos. 4 and 5 each have three. The ground floor of No. 3 incorporates a small, four-pane shop window. It has a six-panel door within a Tuscan surround with a pediment. No. 4 has a six/four-pane sash window on the ground floor and blind panels above; the windows of Nos. 4 and 5 are generally six/six-pane sashes. No. 5 features plain architraves and cornice heads to its first-floor windows, and has wrought iron area railings. Stacks are topped with decorative pots. The rear elevation of No. 3 is of rubble construction and displays six/six-pane sash windows and a small-pane dormer.

The interior has not been inspected. The houses appear distinct from other properties designed by Wood for the Duke of Kingston's estate, suggesting a potential influence from Thomas Jelly's work.
