Description
No. 2 Pierrepont Place is a house built around 1740, possibly designed by John Wood the Elder, featuring a 19th-century shop window. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with the ground floor rendered and painted. It has a narrow double-depth plan and is styled in the Palladian manner.
The exterior consists of three storeys, a cellar, and likely an attic, although the roof is not visible from the street or at the rear. The ground floor has a doorway on the left with a Doric order and pediment, leading to a six-panel door and a small paned shop window measuring nine by four. There is a plat band at the first floor level, and all windows above are six-over-six sashes typical of the late 18th century, with the first-floor windows featuring keyed heads. The building is topped with a cornice and parapet, and there are chimney stacks with pots.
At the rear, there is a full-height segmental bay with bands at each floor level and triple six-over-six sashes separated by stone mullions. The top floor has a smaller window flanked by half-sized ones. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to be very fine, featuring coved ceilings.
This house may have been built before the general development of John Wood the Elder's Parades scheme, as indicated by its narrow site and lack of uniformity, though this does not rule out Wood as the designer.
