Description

Compass Abbey Hotel (part) is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It was built in 1740 and altered in the late 19th century by John Wood the Elder. The building is made of limestone ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof.

It has a double depth plan and has been extended to the rear. The exterior features three storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with two windows on the front. There is a platband on the first floor. The ground floor has a doorway on the left with a six-panel door topped by a pediment on console brackets. There is one plain 19th-century sash window. Wrought iron railings enclose the area.

On the first floor, there are two sash windows with dropped sills and corniced heads that are so close together they almost touch. The second floor has windows similar to those on the first floor but with plain architraves. The building is topped with a dentil cornice and a parapet, and features a late 19th-century mansard roof with a flat-topped dormer containing a plain sash window and ashlar stacks, one of which has pots.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this house seems to have been an afterthought in Wood's design, as it consists of two narrow bays added to the end of the main terrace, indicating that his original plan was not fully realized. The irregular junction with the adjacent building, No.1A, is also noteworthy.
