House, now hotel. 1740, altered late C19. By John Wood the Elder. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, with Welsh slate roof. PLAN: Double depth plan, now extended to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and cellar, two windows. First floor platband. Ground floor has doorway to left, six-panel door, pedimented head on console brackets. One C19 sash window, plain. Wrought iron area railings. First floor has two sashes same, but dropped sills, and corniced heads so close together as to almost touch. Second floor windows as before but with plain architraves. Dentil cornice, parapet, late C19 mansard roof with flat topped dormer with plain sash, ashlar stacks, one with pots. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: This house appears to be an afterthought to Wood's scheme, being two narrow bays squashed on at the end of the main terrace, thus showing to what extent his initial design was not fully realised. The irregular junction with No.1A (qv) should also be noted.
