Description
1A North Parade is a house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It was built around 1754 and altered in the 19th century, possibly by Thomas Jelly, as part of his North Parade Buildings scheme. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a pantile roof.
It has a double depth plan and stands three storeys tall, with an attic and cellar. The ground floor is entirely 19th century, showcasing a small paned bowed shopfront with a glazed door, all beneath a hood. To the right, there is a mid-19th century four-panel door with a rectangular light above it. The first and second floors each have three windows with plain architraves. The outer windows on the first floor have cornices, while the central window features a pediment. All windows are plain 19th century sashes, and the sills of these windows were lowered in the 19th century. The building has a modillion cornice that matches the North Parade but is not at the same level. The roof is a mansard style with two flat-topped dormers.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this house appears to have been designed to connect two developments, sharing design characteristics with both. The horizontal levels align with the North Parade Buildings, indicating that they were built after the time of John Wood the Elder, who is known to have leased land from the Duke of Kingston in 1739, just outside the Town Wall. This plot is located along the line of the wall and could only have been constructed after its demolition.
