Description
This house, now shops with accommodation above, was built around 1818. It is located on the south side of York Street. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with a hidden roof. Originally following a double-depth central entry plan, the ground floor windows have been replaced with shops, although the original layout remains.
The two-storey building has a cornice and parapet. It features three windows, with the central one being a blind sash bar window, blocked up. The other two windows are tripartite sashes with mullions, each six/six pane with two/two pane side lights. The central blind window is a single sash size. The ground floor now contains plain early 19th century timber shopfronts with modern windows. A round arched entrance features a six-panel door with a plain fanlight above. Tall stone stacks with decorative pots are visible, one rising the full height of the adjacent earlier building at No. 2 York Street.
The interior has not been inspected. The site has a history dating back to 1728 when Lindsey's Rooms, designed by John Wood the Younger, were built and opened. These rooms were demolished in 1816, and a lease for this building was granted in 1818.
