Description

4 and 5 Terrace Walk are shops with accommodation above, built around 1730 and altered in the late 18th and late 19th centuries. They were designed by John Wood the Elder. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and have a double depth plan, originally designed as a house with a central entrance but now divided.

The exterior features two storeys and a full-height attic, with five windows in total—three in No. 4 and two in No. 5. The ground floor has two late 19th-century shopfronts. The first floor has tall sash windows, while the second floor has shorter ones, with late 18th-century six-over-six sashes in No. 4 and plain late 19th-century sashes in No. 5. There is a heavy cornice at the second floor level that continues with Nos. 6-9. The building has a parapet and end ashlar stacks with pots. The rear elevation, also of ashlar, shows signs of reconstruction and features a band instead of a continuous cornice, with late 18th-century six-over-six sashes.

The interiors have not been inspected, but a photograph from 1928 shows a fine Adamesque plaster ceiling with coving in a room inside No. 5. This building is part of a row of four houses that John Wood constructed on The Terrace Walk shortly after 1728. They were altered when Lindsey's Rooms were demolished to make way for York Street in 1816. The buildings appear on the Plan of the City of Bath from 1735 and in Wood's "Essay towards a Description of Bath" from 1749.
