Description
The Fountain, located on Terrace Walk, was originally built in 1859 by sculptor Stefano Vallerio Pieroni. It underwent alterations around 1890, was restored in 1977, and rebuilt on its current site in 1989. The fountain is made of limestone ashlar and features mild steel railings.
The exterior includes a central circular basin with a square stone superstructure, which has round-headed keyed openings on each side. It is adorned with a coved cornice that has water-leaf enrichment and a blocking course topped with an urn. The basin has incised lettering that reads "S Stefano Vallerio Pieroni. Fecit. 1859." Surrounding the circular stone base is a flowerbed, which is capped with serpentine railings.
Historically, the fountain was first placed in Stall Street at the entrance to Bath Street, where it dispensed water from a mineral spring. Initially, it was topped with a draped male figure representing Bladud, standing on a cairn, along with four seated allegorical figures in front of each column. By 1890, these figures were removed, and the fountain was modified to its current appearance with urns replacing the figural elements. After years of being overgrown and non-functional, the fountain was restored in 1977 to celebrate the centenary of the Evening Chronicle, now known as the Bath Chronicle. It was relocated to Terrace Walk in 1989, and a plaque at its former site in Stall Street commemorates Bath's status as a World Heritage Site.
