Description
Manvers Hall is a Roman Catholic school that has been converted into a church, built in 1853. The structure is made of limestone ashlar and features a pantile roof. It has a single cell layout with ancillary rooms.
The exterior is two stories high with a basement and consists of seven bays arranged in a one:five:one pattern, with the ends slightly projecting forward. Doric pilasters flank the first floors, and there is horizontal grooving on the ground floor above the plinth, except for rusticated quoin pilasters, a platband, and a sill course. The basement window heads are visible in the plinth. The central and side doors are positioned between the windows, and there are seven first-floor windows. All windows are six-over-six sashes; the ground floor windows have heads with dropped keystones, while the upper floor windows feature recessed surrounds. The building has a frieze with a string course, a cornice, and a parapet with dies, along with a raised central date panel that has a cornice on consoles and a segmental open pediment above. The roof is not visible from the front, and there are truncated ashlar stacks without pots. The rear elevation includes an attic floor with six contemporary iron windows of an industrial type, likely intended for a Sunday School or classroom.
Inside, there is a chapel that has a two-story height and features a balcony supported by cast iron columns, along with a decorative iron balustrade. Historically, this building served as a Catholic school until new schools were opened next to St. John's on South Parade in 1868.
