OLD ORCHARD STREET City Walls (remains of)

GV II

Town wall. C4, repaired/rebuilt in medieval times. Coursed squared limestone, battlemented parapet. Four courses X twenty metres survives. HISTORY: Part of the Roman town wall of Bath, built in stone in C4, rebuilt in Middle Ages and largely demolished in 1760's. This stretch was almost completely demolished in c1959, and present appearance dates from then. This constituted the most considerable remaining section in the city and formerly stood approx 6m. high until its reduction in 1959. SOURCES: B. Cunliffe, The City of Bath (1986), 171.
