Description

The ice-house at 7a Cleveland Row is a subterranean structure associated with Cleveland Pools, the oldest existing outdoor public pool site in Western Europe. It features a circular domed ice chamber made from coursed rough Bath stone blocks, with an entrance passage and access steps located to the north.

Externally, the ice-house is situated about 5 meters south of 7a Cleveland Row and is accessed through the lightwell of that property. At the lightwell level, there is a buttress wall built in 1991 from squared uncoursed Bath stone blocks, which may be reconstituted. An open access portal is positioned to the east, featuring a single-width opening made of Bath stone.

Inside, access to the ice chamber is through a single-width passage with a corbelled roof, leading down three stone steps set at a 45-degree angle to a small square opening into the ice chamber. The domed space measures approximately 6 meters in diameter and includes a central circular stone ventilation opening at the apex, which is now blocked due to modern road construction above. Just above the current floor level, there are regular rectangular putlog holes that likely once supported a floor or shelving. Several iron hooks are positioned at head height around the chamber. The floor consists of compacted soil beneath modern loose laid 19th-century shallow rectangular frog bricks. The soil infilling the lower half of the ice chamber is likely a later addition, obscuring any surviving features at the base. A modern metal grille and surround have been attached to the inside face of the access passage.
