Description
The bridge over the railway on Beckford Road, built around 1840, features extensions from the 20th century and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and engineering brick. The facade facing Sydney Gardens is more elaborate, showcasing moulded coping on the parapet and a cornice above the arch, which is flanked by two ashlar buttresses that step forward. The arch itself is angled and semi-elliptical, with five courses of brick, likely added later, and ashlar facings. The north facade is finished in brick, and there are 20th-century corrugated iron extensions above the parapets. This bridge is part of a significant series of railway bridges leading into Bath, reflecting the contemporary architectural influences on Brunel's design. The railway line in this area was opened in June 1841.
