Description
The retaining wall east of the railway line, located between Beckford Road and Sydney Road, dates from around 1840 and was designed by I.K. Brunel, the engineer for the Great Western Railway. Constructed from limestone ashlar, the wall stands approximately 7 meters high and features a panelled parapet above a cornice and frieze. The lower section has a concave batter, a plinth, and shallow piers that are about 1.5 meters wide and spaced 8 meters apart.
This wall is part of the significant Great Western Railway mainline. The design reflects the sensitivity of the site, enhancing the landscape of Sydney Gardens rather than detracting from it. The broad gauge of the Great Western Railway is clearly visible, and the first train passed through in June 1841.
