Description

This is a detached Italianate villa dating to circa 1848. It was likely designed by H.E. Goodridge. The villa is constructed of limestone ashlar with shallow-pitched slate roofs. The roof features wide bracketed eaves and four ornate stacks with modillion cornices to three cylindrical fluted shafts. The plan is double-plan, comprised of a gabled forward wing to the left and a rear wing.

The exterior is two storeys and a lower ground floor. The first floor has four/four pane tripartite windows in raised surrounds. The first floor window of the left wing, located under the gable, has a pediment and cornices over a single-storey canted bay. The bay features a pierced stone parapet forming a balcony to the first floor window. Cornices are supported on tall consoles, and semicircular arches are present. The windows have moulded sills, margin panes, and horizontal glazing bars of two/three panes to the sash windows on the ground floor, with one to each side and two to the front of the bay. The set-back right-hand range has three windows with a similar flat balcony. A moulded coping and ground floor cornice of the bays extend as string courses, encircling the building.

A single-storey, rectangular porch is located to the centre of the left return, between the external stacks, with a window above. The porch is similar to the canted bay, with blind balustrades below fixed four-pane windows, semicircular arches to the front, over a fanlight, and a four-panel door.

The interior has not been inspected. A drawing among the Bathwick estate papers, located at Raby Castle and dated circa 1848, confirms the house has always borne the name Beckford.
