Description
The Edward VII Memorial in Parade Gardens is a memorial built around 1911 and moved to its current location around 1933. Designed by sculptor N.A. Irent, it is made of Portland stone and bronze. The memorial features a stone obelisk with a square base and plinth, which steps up to a tapered shaft. The plinth has a bronze plaque with an inscription, while the shaft displays a bronze relief of Edward VII's head surrounded by a laurel wreath. At the top of the monument is a bronze figure of "Victory" with wings.
Originally, this memorial was located on George Street, aligned with Milsom Street, following the king's death in 1910. It was relocated as part of the completed Parade Gardens scheme around 1933. Known as 'the Peacemaker', the statue honors Edward VII's skills as a diplomat and his role in establishing the Entente Cordiale with France.
