Description

The Old Police Station is a former police station and magistrates' court, now functioning as a restaurant. It was built in 1865 by Major Charles Davis. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof.

The structure has a rectangular plan, with the magistrates' court located at the front and a cell block behind. It is designed in the Romanesque revival style and stands two storeys tall with three bays. The ground floor has horizontal grooving, while a dentilled string course runs at the first floor level, topped with a blocking course. The first-floor windows are round-headed and decorated with lozenge and zig-zag ornamentation, along with imposts. The ground floor windows have segmental heads, key and imposts, and all windows are two-over-two sashes with horizontal bars only.

To the left, there are fine panelled double doors with a segmental head, a carved key, and a reel mould to the soffit. The building features a heavy bracketed cornice and a hipped roof, with two ashlar stacks topped with pots. The rear cell block includes an additional basement storey and two floors of cells with barred windows. The top floor has four plain two-over-two sash windows for offices, along with further plain windows and an entrance to the section house on the east alleyway. The west end has an ashlar wall with grooving at the ground floor.

The interior was not inspected, but it is noted that the magistrates' court was located behind the first-floor windows. This building is considered a fine example of a mid-19th century police station.
