Description
The Norman archway in the garden wall at the rear of Number 83 (the Vicarage) is a notable structure likely pieced together from fragments of two doorways that were removed from the parish church during its rebuilding in 1830. The archway features enriched chevron and 'T' form orders adorned with beads, which are jumbled on the east side. Each side of the arch is capped by a hood mould that is carved with saltire crosses, suggesting they may originate from different, earlier openings. The impost includes joined cushion caps, and the bases are linked by curvilinear moulding. These fragments may have come from either a chancel and sanctuary arch or from the north and south doors of the church.
