Description
The bridge over the canal at Weston Cut, dated 1728, was built by engineer John Padmore shortly after the Avon Navigation opened in 1727. It is constructed from squared and coursed rubble, with some ashlar. This single-span bridge features a slightly elliptical and eccentric arch, which has a lower springing on the north side than on the south, possibly due to early settlement. The arch is made of concentric ashlar voussoirs, and on the east side, there is a near-central projecting keystone with the date incised. The west side has an off-centre projecting keystone, but it does not have a date. The parapets rise to a slight peak at the center of the span and have dressed copings, sweeping around to short returns at the south end. At the north end, next to The Dolphin public house, the parapet walls are stopped square, with short straight lengths of raked ashlar wall and flush rounded copings on each side. This section of the canal, sometimes referred to as Locksbrook Cut, bypasses a bend and weir in the River Avon.
