Description
Sterling House, formerly known as Albion House, is a house that has been converted into offices, situated on a sloping site and dating from around 1790. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double-pitched roof, which is not visible, along with moulded stacks at the returns. The building has a double depth plan and consists of three storeys and a basement, with a symmetrical front that has three windows. The exterior is surrounded by a level coped parapet, cornice, lintel frieze, and a second-floor sill band that is slightly returned. The ground floor has a platband and chamfered rustication with radial voussoirs that are not returned. The windows are eight/eight-pane horned sash types, with lowered first-floor sills and an additional row of panes above the platband. The entrance door is set back in the centre.
On the left return, the building has rubblestone to the stacks and features a small horned six/six-pane sash window at the centre of the ground floor. The right return is partially covered by a late 19th-century house that is not listed. The rear elevation includes a cast iron balcony with strigillated decoration, located at the right-hand ground floor window. The interior has not been inspected but is believed to retain some plasterwork. Historically, a house is depicted in this location on Harcourt Masters's 1793 map of Bath, indicating that it was then on the edge of town.
