Description
The Mead is a farmhouse, now functioning as a house and café, dating from the late 17th century, probably around 1682, with alterations and extensions made in 1909. The building is constructed of rubble, partly rendered, with freestone quoins and dressings, and features a double Roman tiled roof with coped raised verges and ashlar stacks.
It stands two storeys high, with the north elevation divided into two parts. The right section consists of four bays from the 17th century, showcasing single and two-light casement windows with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds, all beneath a continuous dripmould on the ground floor, while two windows on the first floor are also under dripmoulds. The original door, which was formerly off-centre to the left, has been replaced with a 20th-century door located at the left. The left part features a single light window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, both in ovolo moulded surrounds, with a central 20th-century door. A single-storey wing projects from the left side.
On the south elevation, the west end has three two-light windows and a central 20th-century door, all under a continuous dripmould. The first floor contains three two-light windows and a single light window. An 1860s drawing indicates that there were formerly two gables. The east end has two storeys and attics, featuring two gabled dormers with three large pane sash windows in plain architraves. A datestone inset reads "LC/E/1682" with "REBUILT/1909" above it.
