Description
The retaining walls and garden walls enclosing the West Terrace and Bowling Green Terrace, along with the central flight of steps, are likely from the late 17th century. The retaining wall is made of coursed squared rubble and ashlar, standing approximately 12 feet high. It features a balustraded parapet with 19 bays, which are divided by enriched panelled pedestals topped with alternating ball and urn finials, supported by enriched brackets. The central bay includes a flight of 19 steps, also with balustraded parapets and panelled piers, while the piers at the top of the steps are rusticated. At the north end, the wall measures about 8 to 10 feet high and extends eastward for approximately 25 yards. The south end consists of a coursed rubble retaining wall that is about 25 yards long and varies in height from 4 to 20 feet. The north and south ends of the Bowling Green Terrace, which is the upper terrace, continue the main parapet but lack balustrades, featuring central panelled piers and a moulded cornice. The west wall of the Bowling Green Terrace is constructed of coursed squared rubble.
