Description
The Old Court House, located on Goring Road in Goring-by-Sea, is a two-storey building that likely dates from around 1840, although it incorporates earlier thick stone walls and remnants of a former external stair at the east end. The front of the house is symmetrical and rendered, featuring a central two-storey gabled projection that serves as a porch. It has three widely spaced sash windows with glazing bars only in the upper storey. The porch has double doors with three panels, the top one being glazed, and the building is topped with a slate roof and has partly external gable chimneys.
The rear range of the house is likely from the 18th century but is constructed from earlier materials. It is somewhat shorter than the front range and has irregular fenestration, with five windows above (including one blind window and a horizontal sash on the left) and three windows along with a left-hand door below. All sashes and glazing bars are missing from the upper right-hand window. This section also has a slate roof with an off-centre ridge chimney. Additionally, there is a trap-door in the north-west corner of the house, which is said to lead to a dungeon from the time it served as a court.
