Description

The Elizabeth Almshouses, built in 1860, are a pair of red brick buildings featuring two bands of grey headers and stone dressings. They stand two storeys tall with a symmetrical and richly detailed design. The south front is divided into two sections, each containing three windows, with the middle window being narrower. There is a central wooden porch adorned with criss-cross gable work and spiral corner balusters. The upper windows consist of two-light and single-light designs, while the lower windows are three-light, all set under shallow pointed arches and featuring leaded casements. Between the upper windows are inscribed panels, and above the center of the building is a Dutch gablet with a round-arch niche and a statue below. The slate roof is decorated with cresting, which is also seen on the porches. Three tall moulded ridge chimneys rise from the roof, with the gable chimneys projecting over corbelling on the upper storey. The Elizabeth Almshouses are part of a group of buildings.
