Description

This is a large, unified building complex dating from 1865, potentially designed by G.A. Dean. It is set back from the seafront behind a garden. The complex comprises East Mansions, Heene Court Mansions (numbers 6 to 10 and 11 to 12, known as the Mayfair Hotel), and West Mansions. It is three storeys high, with a basement and attics. The building is constructed of fawn-colored brick with stucco dressings, including a bracketed cornice and decorative drafting to the basement and ground storey. It has a Mansard slate roof. Most windows are sash windows, though some have been altered. Tall dormers are positioned across the first storey, supported by large scroll brackets. Decorative iron railings rise to spiral columns that support a cyma reversa canopy projecting forward over porches featuring composite columns and pilasters supporting an entablature. The entablature is paired on most sections, aside from the two end houses and the three central houses, which project slightly and have continuous balconies attached to the porches. Each of the three central houses contains three bays. The end houses also project and feature five windows each, along with a central porch. A full attic storey, complete with its own cornice, tops both the central and end houses. Balconies and some porches have been glazed in. West Mansions and the upper storeys of number 8 have stucco finishes. The chimneys are varied, some tall with bold bracketing, others featuring a moulded cornice. The basement areas include railings with pike finials. The rear elevation features half-landing extensions in abutting pairs.
