Description

The donkey wheel, located approximately 60 metres south of Old Place, dates from around 1884. It features a circular brick well with a cast iron wheel mechanism designed for attaching to a donkey. The donkey would tread on the brick-paved circular floor, which is approximately 15 feet in diameter, to raise water from the well. This structure is noted as a rare survival of its kind and holds group value with other garden features at Old Place.
