Description
Brook Farm is a building that was originally a barn and later converted into a house. It dates from the late 16th century to the early 17th century and was converted around 1925, with some modifications made in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed with painted brick infill on a brick plinth and features a steeply pitched tiled roof with two 20th-century brick chimneystacks.
The west elevation showcases the exposed timber frame, consisting of three bays with a midrail and arched braces in the first floor end bays. The central cart entrance has been filled in, and there are 20th-century windows and a door. The south side also displays the exposed frame with curved braces, while the north side has an outshot. The east elevation features 1920s casement windows and a projecting gabled porch supported by wooden piers.
Inside, the building retains a good quality frame with chamfers and run-out stops, jowled upright posts, curved braces, and an angled queen-strut roof with purlins and original rafters. There is a series of carpenters' marks and graffiti that likely represent commodities counted. This building was originally a barn associated with Northlands and was owned by the Sergisons of Cuckfield Park.
