Description
Hickstead Place is a timber-framed house that has been altered in the 18th century and since. It stands two storeys high, with the oldest parts being the west and north ranges, which date back to the 15th century and form an L shape. The west front is now covered with curved tiles, and the first floor extends out on four curved brackets. It features a gable with an attic window and two sash windows on the first floor, along with one bay window from the 18th or 19th century on the ground floor. The south wall of this wing has a crow-stepped red brick gable with a large brick chimney breast that extends beyond it, which has a half gable similar in style.
The east wing is an early 17th-century addition that was refaced in the 18th century, with red brick on the ground floor and tile hanging above. A later addition from the 17th century runs parallel to the original north wing and faces south. This section includes three windows and a 19th-century bay window at the east end on the ground floor, as well as a 20-panel door from the 17th century or earlier, topped with a flat 18th-century hood. The east front features two windows and two gabled dormers with carved bargeboards. The entire building is topped with a Horsham slab roof.
Inside, the oldest portion has a 15th-century roof, while there are 16th-century fireplaces and 18th-century panelling and staircase. The house was owned by the Stapley family from the 16th to the 18th century.
