Description

Cobbs Mill is a complex of buildings dating from the 19th century, comprising a water mill, an auxiliary engine house, and a storage annexe. The buildings are constructed of red brick, with some portions clad in weather-boarding, and have tiled roofs.

The central water mill is four storeys high with an attic. The lower sections are red brick, while the upper section is weather-boarded. It features three bays of round-headed windows on the lower floors and square-headed windows above, all with glazing bars. An external iron overshot waterwheel, with an iron panstock and pipe launder, drives four pairs of millstones via a layshaft. This layshaft exemplifies advanced water-wheel technology and is of significant interest. The layshaft can also be driven by a 1906 Tangye suction gas engine, which, along with its gas producer plant, is housed in a two-storeyed brick and weather-boarded extension. A further two-storeyed weather-boarded annexe, located on the downstream side of the mill, is supported by two brick arches. This annex also features two bays of round-headed windows with glazing bars. The entire complex is of exceptional technological interest.
