Description
North End Farm Barn is a barn dating from the mid to late 18th century, which incorporates some older upright posts and rafters. It is a timber-framed structure with five bays, featuring a deep plinth made of red brick and weatherboarding above, topped with a half-hipped tiled roof. The barn has a central cart entrance. Inside, the frame is constructed with good scantling, and the roof includes curved queen struts and through purlins. The bay posts have jowls with cut profiles, and there is a staggered midrail with curved tension braces. A notable feature of this barn is that the bay to the west of the wagon bay is double the size of the other eastern bays; it has an intermediate post instead of a bay post and lacks a tie beam. To accommodate the increased stress in this area, the purlin is clasped by a collar rather than using queen struts, and curved horizontal braces, resembling dragon pieces, are secured by a bare face lap dovetail into the plate and tie.
