Description
Little Thakeham is a Grade I listed house built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1903, recognized as one of his finest works. This large H-shaped house is designed in the style of a Cotswold manor and constructed from locally quarried coursed Hythe sandstone, which is notably soft and has weathered significantly, giving the house the appearance of a genuine 16th-century building from the outside.
The house features two storeys and an attic, with nine windows overall. The outer wings are topped with gables, and there are two additional gables situated between these wings. At the center, there is a prominent five-sided bay that projects outward and contains five windows, each made up of four tiers of two lights. This bay lights the music room, which includes the main staircase and a gallery. The roof is tiled, and the windows are casement style.
The north or entrance front showcases a central projecting porch with two storeys above it, and there are chimney breasts at the ends of the wings. Additionally, there is a service wing attached to the main structure.
