Description
Wantley Manor is a Grade II* listed building located on the east side of London Road in Henfield. The back part of the manor is timber-framed and forms three sides of a square. The oldest section, which contains the medieval hall, is likely the south wing. The east wing, which was later converted into outhouses, was probably added next, followed by the west wing, which is now obscured by a later 18th-century addition further to the west.
The timber framing is exposed in some areas but has mostly been refaced with red brick or tiles on a cemented or brick base. The original roof was made of Horsham slabs, but it has mostly been replaced with tiles, including one section of pantiles. The manor has two storeys with three windows in each wing, and features casement windows.
In the 18th century, the west wing was extended with a portion facing the road, which has two storeys and three windows, and is faced with red mathematical tiles. It also features a modillion eaves cornice and a hipped Horsham slab roof, with intact glazing bars. The doorway has engaged columns, a pediment, a semi-circular fanlight, and a door with six fielded panels. There are small circular windows on each side of the door, which were inserted around 1920.
