Description

East Martyns Lodge Cottage, also known as Martyn Lodge and Lodge Cottage, is an early 18th-century house that was later converted into three separate dwellings and refaced in the early 19th century. It is three storeys high and originally had five windows, though the glazing bars are now missing. The front of the building is stuccoed, while the sides are painted brick. It features a modillion eaves cornice and a string course. The windows are set within moulded architrave surrounds. A porch with Doric columns contains a doorway with a rectangular fanlight and a door consisting of six moulded panels. Two recessed window bays were added to the east side at a later date. The building has group value, being an important part of the streetscape. It was formerly occupied by Canon Nathaniel Woodward, the founder of Lancing College, who died there in 1891.
