Description
The building is a threshing barn, which was later used as a workshop. It likely dates from the 15th century or early 16th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The barn is timber-framed and covered in weatherboarding, with a roof now clad in 20th-century pantiles. The front features several 20th-century metal-framed windows and two garage doors that have been added. The frame is constructed from very heavy timber, with principal posts averaging 10 inches by 12 inches. There is deep arch bracing to three trusses, and the roof includes four crown posts of square section. The medieval rafters have collar mortices, but the northeasternmost bay has a collar purlin that has been cut, with side purlins inserted to support a queen strutted collar on the gable. On the southwest gable, there is evidence of stud and stave morticing for partitions below the tie, and the mid-tie is set towards the inner face, indicating that the structure may have originally extended westward, possibly as a single-storey lean-to with a catslide roof.
