Description

Little Coltstaple Farm is a house, formerly a farmhouse and previously a manor house, dating back to around 1397. A manor house is recorded on the site from that year, and the current building incorporates elements of that original structure, featuring an open hall with a cross wing. An early 17th century floor was inserted and refronted in the 18th century, with a large late 20th century wing added to the northwest. The building is timber framed, with the frame exposed on the first floor, showcasing curved door braces and a late 18th century diaper bond brick ground floor. Parts of the southeast front are weatherboarded to the first floor, while the southwest front is tile hung to the first floor. It has a tiled roof with two brick chimneys, one of which is external on the southeast side and has a stone base. The house is two storeys in height with three windows. The windows are 20th century wooden casements. Inside, features include a 17th century newel post and some panelling. Other details include a roll moulded dais beam, an open fireplace, an early 17th century inserted ceiling with a chamfered spine beam with lambs tongue stops, plank doors, jowled posts, and a crown post roof with head and foot braces and a collar beam. The building is possibly referred to in a 1574 will as Coltstaple House, describing it as having "2 rooms below stares other necessary rooms and 2 rooms above stares”, and it was also the subject of an inventory in 1662.
