Description

The Market House, located on the north-east side of Steyning High Street, is an 18th-century building that stands two storeys tall and features two windows. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the upper floor is tile-hung, topped with a tiled roof. The first floor retains its original glazing bars, although there is a modern window on the ground floor.

A stuccoed clock tower was added around 1835, which includes a clock-face that was relocated from Michelgrove when the original house there was demolished. The clock tower has a cornice above it, topped with a small belfry and a weather-vane. Historically, the building served as a fire station, and the alarm bell from that time still remains. After 1920, it was repurposed as the Market Office.
