Description
John Penfold Ltd is an early 17th-century central chimney house that was altered in the 19th century. It stands two storeys tall, with the front stuccoed in the 19th century and featuring two small gables. The upper storey has two windows, with the southern window linked by panel treatment to the ground floor window of the office. There is a modern shop front on the left side. The building has a tiled roof, but the chimney and the internal ground floor walls have been removed. Inside, there are chamfered beams and original floorboards. The chimney bay, which runs from the front to the back of the house, originally contained an entrance lobby, the chimney, a passage, and a semi-circular staircase. The staircase remains in its original position between the first and attic floors, and some wattle and daub partitioning is still present. At the back of the shop, there is a two-storey mid-Victorian addition and a complete 19th-century corn chandlers yard that includes a large barn, cart shed, stables, tack room, and a store for chaff cutting.
