Description

The Bosham War Memorial was designed and built in 1923 by Bosham parishioners. It stands on the green sward of Quay Meadow, overlooking Bosham harbour and flanked by the Raptackle (a building of group value) and the Parish Church of Holy Trinity (a building of exceptional group value).

The memorial is broadly rectangular and enclosed by a low rubble wall faced with flint, with stone-capped pillars and gateways on the south-east and south-west sides. This creates a garden area, allowing full viewing of the main monument. Entrances at the west and east corners feature simple, low wooden gates. The garden area's surface is brick paved, with an oval insert of knapped flint arranged to form a cross using stone paving.

The main monument is a four-stage, stepped rectangular structure of rubble stone with a stone coping, topped with a plain stone cross. Granite tablets are affixed to the south-facing front: three on the lower section list the names of those from Bosham who fell in the Second World War (42), along with the inscription "BUILT BY THEIR COMRADES/TO THE MEN OF BOSHAM/WHO DIED FOR ENGLAND". A single tablet on the upper section commemorates those who fell in the First World War (30). A small granite tablet within the surrounding wall carries the inscription "WHEN MEMORY/FALLS FORGOTTEN/REMEMBERANCE SHALL REMAIN.” The garden also contains a bronze plaque dated 1923, inscribed with the words: "THIS WAR MEMORIAL HAS BEEN/ERECTED BY THE VOLUNTARY WORK/OF THE EX-SERVICEMEN OF BOSHAM. THE MATERIALS FOR/CONSTRUCTION HAVE BEEN/PRESENTED BY BOSHAM RESIDENTS.”
