Description
Greenways is a house built in 1910 by a local builder, W G Tarrant, in a Vernacular Revival style strongly influenced by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It is built of brick in English bond, with a steeply pitched tiled roof and four tall, panelled brick stacks. The house has an L-shaped plan. The east-facing entrance front is two storeys high with five windows. The first floor has three central casements with wooden shutters, divided from the end windows by panelled external brick stacks with curved outside edges; a brick lozenge pattern is visible below the central window. The ground floor features alternating bands of brick and tiled courses, two porthole windows, and a central, splayed doorcase with a round-headed arch, a keystone, and a two-panelled door. The corners are quoined. The south-facing garden front is two storeys high with attics, and has five windows, three hipped dormers, and a two-storey, tiled, splayed central bay of nine lights. Ground floor windows have cross casements. A loggia of brick and tiled piers with a glazed screen is attached to the west. Similar windows are found on the return front, including a four-light staircase window. The interior is very complete and includes a panelled hall, a well staircase with turned balusters, a panelled corner room with cupboards, wooden fireplaces with tiled surrounds, and ceilings with roundel decoration. The central room has a Gibbs surround fireplace with blue tiles and an alcove. A west room features a wooden and tiled fireplace, cupboards with a lozenge pattern, a ceiling with roundel decoration, and three original pendant light fittings. The kitchen retains some original cupboards. The staircase to the second floor has thick stick balusters. The original doors remain in place.
