Description
The Tomb of Guilio Salviati is a funerary monument located in Brookwood Cemetery, dedicated to Giulio Salviati, who died in 1898. The mason responsible for the tomb is unknown. It features a Carrara marble kneeling angel positioned against a cross made of pink granite, which stands on a tapering granite plinth. This plinth is adorned with mosaic panels, likely produced by Salviati's own firm. The front panel includes an inscription framed by a laurel garland, while the side and rear panels display Neo-Roman floral designs. The entire monument is enclosed within a granite kerb.
Giulio Salviati came from a Venetian family known for their glass-making and managed the Regent Street branch of the family firm, which created some of the mosaic work in St Paul's Cathedral, including the figures of prophets in the dome's spandrels. Salviati tragically died by suicide in his workshop. His mosaics were also used in the nearby Drake family mausoleum.
