Description

The headstone for John Singer Sargent, who lived from 1856 to 1925, is located in Brookwood Cemetery. This Grade II memorial is made of Portland stone and features an upright grave-marker inspired by an Attic stele. It is inscribed at the top with the words 'LABORARE EST HONORARE' and at the foot with 'HE GIVETH HIS BELOVED SLEEP'. Sargent was a prominent American painter known for his society portraits during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. He is also remembered for a large memorial in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, which includes a version of his sculpture of Christ in agony. This headstone, which also commemorates his sister Emily, is a simple example of late Neo-classicism and is listed for its historical significance.
