Description
The Tomb of Dr Gottlieb William Leitner, who lived from 1840 to 1899, is a Grade II memorial located in Brookwood Cemetery. It features a Carrara marble bust of Leitner set within a pink granite surround. The bust, which depicts Leitner with a beard, is placed in a curved niche, and around it is an inscription in raised letters that reads, "THE LEARNED ARE HONOURED IN THEIR WORK."
Dr. Leitner was born in Budapest and was a modern linguist specializing in oriental languages. He served as a professor at King's College London and established several educational institutions in the Indian subcontinent, including Lahore University. He also founded the Oriental Institute at Woking, which was dedicated to teaching these languages to colonial administrators, leading to the establishment of Britain's first mosque in Woking. The tomb is noted for its sculptural exuberance and serves as an interesting reflection of late imperial cosmopolitanism.
