Description

The headstone to Sir Samuel Luke Fildes is a Grade II listed memorial located in Rookwood Cemetery. It commemorates Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, a Royal Academician who lived from 1844 to 1927. The memorial is made of Portland stone and is designed as an upright block resembling an Athenian stele, or grave-marker. It features an elaborate palmette and acanthus-enriched head. Fildes is known for his social realist paintings and later for his portrait work, which earned him a knighthood. His wife Fanny is also commemorated on this headstone. The memorial is noted for its historic and design significance as a late example of a Neo-classical style.
