Description
The statue of William Haig-Brown, located outside the South Africa cloister at Charterhouse School, was created in 1900 by H Bates and his students. It is made of ashlar and bronze and features a stepped, swept plinth with an inscription panel and a roll-moulded cornice. The seated bronze figure depicts William Haig-Brown in academic gown, holding a model of the school chapel in his right hand. Haig-Brown served as headmaster from 1864 to 1897 and was instrumental in relocating the school from London to its current site in 1872. Although the statue was modeled by H Bates, he passed away before it was completed, and his students finished the work.
