Description

Aurum House is a former chapel built in the early 19th century, with additions and alterations made in 1930. The structure is constructed of Bargate rubblestone with brick dressings, and the front is finished in painted brick laid in Flemish bond. It has a concealed roof made of corrugated iron.

The building is two storeys high and features three bays across the front, with the gable end facing the road. The front bay is an addition, and the rear bays were heightened during this addition. Architectural details include a plinth, rusticated quoins, and a corniced first-floor band that displays the legend 'The Salvation Army'. There is an eaves entablature and a pediment above. The central entrance consists of a double door with six raised and fielded panels, set in a raised surround. The windows are framed with architraves and feature 20th-century two-light windows, with the taller first-floor openings having blocked bases.

At the rear, the building has quoins and three round-arched windows, with the central one partially blocked. The right side has three tall round-arched windows, with the tympana blocked and later eight-pane windows installed. The left side mirrors the right side with a central window similar to those on the right.

Originally, the building served as a Congregational Chapel in the 1830s and later became a Salvation Army meeting hall. At the time of inspection, it was noted to be in a state of disrepair.
