Description

Minton Cottage is a house located on Godalming Station Road, dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. The structure is primarily timber-framed but has been largely rebuilt in painted Flemish bond brick, topped with plain tile roofs. It is 1½ storeys high and consists of three framed bays, with the left bay originally serving as a smoke bay and the right-hand bays floored. A rear wing was added to the left in the late 18th century, with further extensions made in 1984.

The south front features three small-pane casement windows arranged in groups of three, two, and two lights, with two additional windows above that break the eaves under gablets. The right side of the building has a wall that is tiled up to approximately 1½ meters, a central board door from the 20th century in a gabled porch, and a six-pane window on the first floor, along with a tile-hung gable. The 20th-century two-storey addition on the right and the 1984 wing extension are not considered to be of special interest.

Inside, the rear wall retains square-panelled timber-framing. The former wall between the open hall and the right-hand bay has been removed on the ground floor but remains on the first floor, featuring wattle and daub panels and a large-scantling arched brace. The left-hand truss has a cambered tie-beam with queen posts. The right bay contains old floor joists, while the left bays have a 17th-century inserted floor, with lambs tongue stops to the chamfered spine beam. There is an inglenook with a chamfered timber bressummer on the ground floor, and on the first floor, an old panelled cupboard is located to the right of the fireplace. Although the roof was not inspected, it has been reported to have sooted rafters over the left-hand bay and sockets from former wind braces. A chimney in the added rear wing, which has since been removed, contained a brick dated 1783.
