Description
The former stabling and coach house to Grafham House is a building from around 1863, although its central part may include an earlier core, possibly dating back to the 18th century. It was likely designed and funded by William Woodyer, who also designed Grafham House, the former vicarage. The structure is L-shaped, with a two-storey central section that contains stables and a hayloft above, flanked by one-storey sections. The eastern section features two coach houses, while the southern section consists of either tack rooms or outbuildings associated with the vicarage.
The exterior of the central part is timber-framed, covered in weatherboarding and set on a brick plinth, topped with a steeply pitched tiled roof that is hipped to the west and gabled to the east, complete with a brick chimney stack. The upper part has fixed casement windows. The east and south sections are constructed of red brick, also with tiled roofs and casement windows.
Inside, the central part has three bays with exposed upright posts and straight tension braces, although a floor has been added just below the tie beam level. The north and east walls reveal some exposed timber framing with lath and plaster infill. There is an arched wooden door on the west side and a 19th-century brick fireplace featuring a small pointed arched cast iron firegrate. This building is a 19th-century former stables and coach house with a possible earlier core, likely built by William Woodyer, and it is part of the grouping with Grafham House, the former vicarage.
